Sony E 16-55mm F2.8G Review
Introducing Sony’s very first 16-55mm lens for its APS-C cameras. The lens is a midrange zoom with a focal length equivalent to 24-82.5mm in full-frame terms, and a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the range. It’s a pro-grade Sony lens with amazing optics and razor-sharpness from edge-to-edge. You can use it for all sorts of subjects, with its flexible focal length being well-suited to street, landscapes, travel and even portraiture. The lens is particularly well-matched with higher-level APS-C cameras. We mounted it on our Alpha 6400 for this outing. You can also mount it on a body with IBIS like the Alpha 6500 or Alpha 6600.
Fast constant F2.8 zoom
Constant aperture zoom tends to have better optical quality than variable aperture zoom. With a constant aperture zoom lens you don’t need to adjust the ISO or shutter speed to compensate for the change in aperture to try to maintain a constant exposure as you zoom because there is no decrease in the amount of light entering the lens. A zoom lens with a fixed wide maximum aperture allows you to do things in lower light condition, which would not be possible at higher apertures.

Excellent portrait lens

If you are looking for a zoom to do portraits, we will definitely recommend this lens. Shot fully zoomed out to 55mm, the Sony's E 16-55mm F2.8 G is an excellent portrait lens. If you step back enough and want to shoot wide, a non-distorted portrait can even be shot at around 16mm, as demonstrated by the one we shot. As you can observe, the eyes of the subject are very sharp. The lens is perfectly capable of taking very nice portraits if you are not working in very low light conditions.

Smooth and beautiful bokeh
Alpha 6400 | E 16-55mm F2.8 G | 35mm | 1/4000 sec | F/2.8 | ISO 100
From an image quality standpoint, this lens is surprisingly impressive. Thanks to the wide-open f/2.8 lens, the 16-55mm produces very sharp imagery with equally impressive, more natural-looking bokeh created with the 9-bladed aperture. Sharpness, contrast, details and the colours of the images turn out almost perfect. The lens also comes with a focus hold button that you can customize and program to work with their camera body’s functions such as Eye AF. The XD Linear Motor fully utilises the speed potential of the camera body, focusing on and tracking even fast-moving subjects with outstanding speed and precision. Operation is also quiet, allowing videographers to take advantage of the constant f/2.8 aperture.
Compact, lightweight, ideal for wide range of applications
Alpha 6400 | E 16-55mm F2.8 G | 35mm | 1/6400 sec | F/2.2 | ISO 100
The especially small size and lightweight makes this lens so much more unique. A very compact and powerful lens at only 494 grams, which is ideal for everything from portraits to everyday snapshots, combining with compact APS-C bodies to form a highly manageable system for a wide range of photographic application. It goes from wide angle to short telephoto; it’s wide enough and zooms enough for most cases, hence a great walkaround lens. The front lens element is fluorine coated to repel water and grime, and the lens is dust and moisture resistant, rendering it to be confidently used in challenging outdoors environments.
