This utility updates BDP-S4100/S5100 firmware to version M15.R.0197 and provides the following benefits:

Check the Current Firmware Version

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  3. If the player starts to play a disc, press the STOP button and wait until the xross media bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  4. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup – System Settings, and then press the ENTER button.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Quick Start Mode and make sure that the Quick Start Mode is set to Off.
    If the Quick Start Mode is set to On, change the setting to Off. Otherwise, the firmware update may not succeed.
  6. Use the arrow keys to select System Information, and then press the ENTER button.
  7. The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc player will be listed on the television screen.
    If the last four digits of the version number are 0197 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware update.

How To Get the Firmware update
There are two ways to perform the BDP-S4100/S5100 Firmware update:

Network update:

  • The Network update operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network update method.
  • You will need to connect the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
  • Please see the Network Update Instructions section, for more information.

Create an update Disc:

Network Update Instructions
The Network Update operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Update method to update the BDP-S4100/S5100 firmware.

Important Notes

  • WARNING!! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • In order to use this update method it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
  • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.

Firmware update Instructions
Note: The firmware update process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BD player is connected.
  2. Connect the LAN(100) terminal on the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  4. If there is a disc in the Blu-ray Disc player, please remove the disc.
  5. At the xrossmediabar (XMB) , use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup - Network Update and then press the ENTER button.
  6. Network Update confirmation will display. Press OK to perform the Network Update.
  7. The message Update to a new software version is displayed, and the latest software version is displayed on the television.
  8. Select Start and then press the ENTER button.
  9. The first portion of the update process starts.
  10. During the update, the progress bar, showing x % and the download capacity, are displayed on the television.
    Note: The x changes to 0 through 100, indicating the update progress.
  11. The Blu-ray Disc player will restart itself when it is complete and the second portion of the update will start.

  13. The firmware update is complete when the Blu-ray Disc player automatically powers off.
    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the player until the update is complete. Doing so may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  14. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  15. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0197, the firmware update was successful.

Network Firmware update FAQ

  1. When running network update, the television displays the message, Connection status cannot be confirmed and you cannot perform the firmware update.
    There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.
    1. Check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the LAN(100) terminal on the unit and to the Internet source.
    2. Check the Blu-ray Disc player network settings and confirm that the player has its own IP address.
    Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the Proxy Server input field.
    3. Confirm both 'Physical Connection' and 'Internet Access' are OK in Network Settings - Network Connection Status.
    4. Follow the Network Update Instructions again.
  2. The power was shut down during the update process.
    Power on the Blu-ray Disc player and try the network update process again.
  3. The firmware update process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.
    Please contact Sony.
  4. While updating the firmware, Update failed screen appears.
    Please perform the following procedure:
    1. Ensure there is no problem with your network connection to the Internet.
    2. At the update failed screen, select OK to try the network update again or select
    Cancel to cancel the network update process.
    3. If the symptom does not improve after trying the network update again, please
    download the firmware from the web and create an update disc.
    4. Cancel the network update process and proceed with disc update at Home screen by inserting the update disc created previously.
  5. The firmware update continues to fail after multiple tries.
    Follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Update Disc section to create an update disc.
    1. Insert the update disc at the update failed screen, and then select Retry on the screen.
    2. If the problem still persists, please contact Sony.

Details

Download the Firmware and Create an update Disc
If you cannot connect the BDP-S4100/S5100 to your Internet source, please use the disc update method.

Important Notes:

  • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware update is needed for your Blu-ray Disc player.
  • WARNING!! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair
  • WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • Use a brand new CD-R disc to burn the firmware update. The player may not be able to correctly read a dirty disc or a disc with scratches.
    Note: A CD-R disc is strongly recommended. Do not use a CD-RW disc.
  • Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware update: Windows® 8.1, Windows® 8, Windows® 7, Windows® Vista or Windows® XP is recommended.
  • A drive with CD disc burning capability and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the update disc.
  • After you create the disc, please see the Disc Update Instructions section below, for more information.
  • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to a compatible television.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download and Disc Creation Instructions

  1. Download the UPDATA_M15R0197.zip file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATA_M15R0197.zip file is 105,866,339 bytes.
    a. Right-click the UPDATA_M15R0197.zip file, and click Properties.
    b. On the UPDATA_M15R0197.zip Properties screen, verify that the Size: listed is 100 MB (105,866,339 bytes).
    Note: The Size on disk: listed may be different. That is normal.
    c. If the file size is different than the 105,866,339 bytes, please download the UPDATA_M15R0197.zip file again.
  3. Double-click the UPDATA_M15R0197.zip file to extract the firmware files.
    Note: Four files will be extracted: MSB15-FW.BIN, MSB15-FW.ID, MSB15-FW_MB.BIN and MSB15-FW_MB.ID .
  4. Burn all the files to a new CD-R disc and be sure to finalize the disc.
  5. If write errors occur during the CD burning process, discard the disc and create a new update disc.

Disc update Instructions
The instructions below are for how to install the firmware update using a disc.

Firmware update Instructions

  • WARNING!! Do not power off the player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the player to the point of requiring repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the update is complete. Doing so may damage the player to the point of requiring repair.
    Note: The firmware update process takes a minimum of 15 minutes.
  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  3. Place the update disc in the player, and close the disc tray.
  4. After the disc is loaded, the firmware update message is displayed on the television.
  5. Use the remote control to select OK, and then press the ENTER button.
  6. The first portion of the update process starts.
  7. During the update, the progress bar, showing x %, is displayed on the television.
    Note: The x changes to 0 through 100, indicating the update progress.
  8. The Blu-ray Disc player will restart itself when it is completed and the second portion of the update will start.
  9. The progress bar, showing x %, is displayed on the television.
    Note: The x changes to 0 through 100, indicating the update progress.
  10. The firmware update is complete when the disc tray ejects and the Blu-ray Disc player automatically powers off.
    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the player until the update is complete. Doing so may result in your player being unresponsive and requiring repair.
  11. Remove the update disc from the player.
  12. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  13. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0197, the firmware update was successful.

If The Update Disc Does Not Eject
If the update disc does not eject even though the update has finished, please follow the steps below.

  1. Power off the Blu-ray Disc player, and disconnect the AC power cord.
  2. Reconnect the AC power cord while simultaneously holding down the Open/Close button on the player.
    Note: Pressing the Open/Close button on the remote control does not work. It is necessary to press Open/Close button on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  3. Keep pressing the Open/Close button until the disc tray opens.
  4. Remove the disc.
  5. Once the disc is removed, disconnect and reconnect back the AC power cord to recover the player.

Disc Firmware update FAQ

  1. UP NG is displayed on the player front panel display.
    1. Confirm that you are using the update disc that was created in the previous steps and re-insert it.
    2. Select OK at the update failed screen.
    3. If the symptom does not improve after trying the update disc again,, remove the update disc from the Blu-ray Disc player and delete the update files from your computer.
    4. Download the firmware update file again and create a new update disc.
    5. Insert the update disc at the update failed screen, and then select OK on the screen.
    6. If the problem continues, please contact Sony.
  2. The power was shut down during the update process.
    Power on the Blu-ray Disc player and try the update process again.
  3. When I double click on the UPDATA_M15R0197.zip update file I downloaded from the update web site, the MSB15-FW.BIN, MSB15-FW.ID, MSB15-FW_MB.BIN and MSB15-FW_MB.ID files are not created.
    The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Update Disc section to create a new update disc.
  4. The firmware update process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.
