About this download

This utility is only for use with the products identified and sold in Asia Pacific. Not all models are sold in all countries.
This utility upgrades the firmware to version M21.R.0164 and provides the following benefits:

  • Improves Bravia Internet Video Connectivity
  • Improves the compatibility of BD-ROM playback

Check the Current Firmware Version 

  • Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
  • Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
  • Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
  • If the system starts to play a disc, press the "HOME" button and wait until the xross media bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  • Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" – "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  • Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
  • The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System will be listed on the television screen.

    If the last four digits of the version number are 0164 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.

How To Get the Firmware upgrade 
There are two ways to obtain the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System firmware upgrade:

  1. Update via Internet:
    • The Update via Internet operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Update via Internet method.
    • You will need to connect the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
    • Please see the Update via Internet Instructions section, for more information.
  2. Update via USB Memory:
    • If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to your Internet source, please use the Update via USB Memory method.
    • Please see the Download the Firmware and save into USB memory section, for more information.

Update via Internet Instructions 
The Update via Internet operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Update via Internet method to upgrade the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System firmware.
Important Notes

  • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware upgrade is needed for your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
  • WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • In order to use this upgrade method it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
    Note: If you cannot connect the system to your Internet source, please see the How To Get the Firmware upgrade section above for information about Update via USB Memory options.
  • In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Firmware upgrade Instructions
WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
Note: The firmware upgrade process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
  2. Connect the "LAN(100)" terminal on the system to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
  4. After Power ON, the message [A new software version is available. Please go to the “Setup” section of the menu and select “Software Update” to perform the update. For details on updates, see the Sony home page] is displayed on the TV.
  5. If there is a disc in the system, please remove the disc.
  6. Press the “FUNCTION” button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
    IMPORTANT: The upgrade cannot be performed unless the system is set to "BD/DVD" function.
  7. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup”- "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  8. Use the arrow keys to select "Quick Start Mode" and make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to “Off”. Note: If the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "On", change the setting to "Off". Otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.
  9. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "Software update" and then press the ENTER button.
  10. Use arrow keys to select “Update via Internet”, and then press ENTER button.
  11. The message [A new software version has been found on the network. Do you want to update the software?] is displayed on the television
  12. Select "OK" and then press the ENTER button.
  13. The message [Update to a new software version. Never turn off power while performing update. Current version M21.R.xxxx New version M21.R.xxxx] is displayed on the TV.
  14. Select “Start’’ and then press the ENTER to proceed with software update.
  15. The upgrade starts and “UPDATE” appears on the front panel display. Note: Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System will restart by itself before the update starts.
  16. The firmware upgrade is complete when “DONE” appears on the front panel display.
    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may cause the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair. 
  17. The Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System will automatically power off.
  18. Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
  19. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0164, the firmware upgrade was successful.

Update via Internet FAQ

  1. The message [“Update failed. Connect the USB memory containing the update files or connect to the network to retry. If the update fails again, please contact the customer service center”] is displayed on the TV screen. 
    Please perform the following procedure:
    1. Check the following items.
      - Check that the router and all devices connected between the system and the router are switched on.
      - Check that all the cables between the system and the router are correctly connected.
      - Verify that you are using the correct type of cable (straight or crossover) between the system and the router.
    2. Using the remote control, select OK on the display and press Enter.
      If you can not perform the network update, try the Update via USB memory Instructions.
      Please check Download the Firmware and save into USB memory and Update via USB Memory Instructions for more information.
      If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact Sony.

  2. When running Update vis Internet, the television displays the message, [“Connection status Cannot be confirmed cannot communicate with the server. Please try again later.”] and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade. 
    There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.
    1. Check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the "LAN(100)" terminal on the unit and to the Internet source.
    2. Check the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System network settings and confirm that the system has its own IP address.
      Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the "Proxy Server" input field.
    3. Follow the Update via Internet Instructions again.

  3. The power was shut down during the upgrade process.
    Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System, and then follow the Update via Internet Instructions again.

  4. After the Update via Internet process has started, the message [Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen] is displayed but the progress bar on the display has not changed.
    Depending on your network circumstances, the Update via Internet process can take a long time (up to 60 minutes).
    That is why the message [Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen] is displayed and the progress bar on the display will not change for a long time.

  5. The update via Internet has been going for over 60 minutes and has not finished. 
    If your system is connected via wireless to the network, please try to connect with a cable to the network and try the procedure again.
    If the problem continues, the network transmission speed may be low. In that case please try the Update via USB Memory Instructions.
    Please check Download the Firmware and save into USB memory and Update via USB Memory Instructions for more information.
    If the symptom does not improve after re-upgrade, please contact Sony.

  6. The message [This device is not connected to network. Perform network diagnostics in the connection server setting.] is displayed on TV screen.
    Please check whether the LAN cable is connected to the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.

  7. The message [Already Updated] is display on the TV screen if the firmware of Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
    The firmware version that currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System is the latest version.

Download the Firmware and save into USB memory

  • WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware upgrade:
    Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP is recommended.
  • In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download and save into USB memory Instructions

  1. Download the UPDATA_M21R0164.zip file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATA_M21R0164.zip file is 111,416,842 bytes.
    a. Right-click the UPDATA_M21R0164.zip file, and click "Properties".
    b. On the "UPDATA_M21R0164.zip Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "106 MB (111,416,842 bytes)".
    Note: The "Size on disk:" listed may be different. That is normal.
    c. If the file size is different than the "111,416,842 bytes", please download the UPDATA_M21R0164.zip file again.
  3. Double-click the UPDATA_M21R0164.zip file. Then, extract the ZIP file.
  4. The extracted files will be named "MSB21-FW.BIN",“MSB21-FW.ID", " MSB21-FW_MB.BIN" and “MSB21-FW_MB.ID"
  5. Save the decompressed files (4 files) to the root directory of USB, the folder name should be “UPDATE"

Version Upgrade Instructions 
The instructions below are for how to install the firmware upgrade using USB Memory.
Firmware upgrade Instructions
WARNING!! Do not power off the system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.
WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the upgrade is complete. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.
Note: The firmware upgrade process takes a minimum of 30 minutes.

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System
  3. Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
    IMPORTANT: The upgrade cannot be performed unless the system is set to "BD/DVD" function.
  4. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup"- "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select "Quick Start Mode" and make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to “Off". Note: If the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "On", change the setting to "Off". Otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.
  6. Insert USB that contain the 4 image files.
  7. At the xcross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select “Setup" – “Software Update" and the press the ENTER button.
  8. Use arrow keys to select “Update via USB Memory", and then press the ENTER button.
  9. The message, [“Update files found in the USB memory. Do you want to update the software? Current version M21.R.xxxx New version M21.R.xxxx. Do not turn off the power or remove the USB memory during the update."] is displayed on the television.
  10. While the upgrade is installed the message "UPDATE" is displayed on the front panel display.
  11. The firmware upgrade is complete when "DONE" appears on the front panel display. Then, the system is turned off automatically.
    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may result in your system being unresponsive and requiring repair.
  12. Power on the unit and check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0164, the firmware upgrade was successful.

Check the Current Firmware Version

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System and press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
  3. If the system starts to play a disc, press the "HOME" button and wait until the xross media bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  4. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" – "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
  6. The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System will be listed on the television screen.

    If the last four digits of the version number are 0164, the firmware upgrade was successful.

Update via USB Memory FAQ

  1. "UPDATE" and "ERROR" is displayed on the front panel display. 
    Please perform the following procedure:
    1. Disconnect the AC cord, then plug the AC cord again.
    2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
    3. Follow the Update via USB Memory Instructions again.
    If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact Sony. 

  2. The power was shut down during the upgrade process. 
    Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System, and then follow the Update via USB Memory again.

  3. When I double click on the UPDATA_M21R0164.zip upgrade file I downloaded from the upgrade web site, the "MSB21-FW.BIN", “MSB21-FW.ID", "MSB21-FW_MB.BIN" and “MSB21-FW_MB.ID" files are not created.
    The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and save into USB memory section to create a new upgrade disc

  4. The firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.
